You don’t think twice about having multiple pairs of shoes for different tasks – smart shoes for work, walking boots for adventures, slippers for relaxing at home. So why wouldn’t you invest in extra specs to suit various parts of your life?
Owning multiple pairs of glasses isn’t a luxury – it’s a practical way to help take care of your eye health. Afterall, it’s expecting a lot from one pair to deliver for everything from work and hobbies to driving and reading.
Why might I need multiple pairs of glasses?
Patrick & Menzies Partner and Dispensing Optician Dan Edwards explained: “Making sure you have the right eyewear is essential in caring for your eyes, helping you to be safe and comfortable in daily activities.
“Tasks such as screen time, playing sport and relaxing with a good book all make different demands on your vision and in turn your eyewear. And although you don’t need different eyewear for every occasion, it is worth looking at the various parts of your life to see where a separate pair of glasses would be of benefit.”
Hobbies
Whether you love reading, crafting, playing a musical instrument or any other close-up activity, specific close work lenses can be of real benefit.
Often referred to as reading glasses, near vision lenses are useful for much more than that. For example, people who take part in creative endeavours such as needlework or pottery could find an extra pair of near vision glasses make focussing on small detail close at hand more comfortable both visually, and in terms of their posture.
Dan added: “Hobbies can cover such a broad spectrum of activities which is why we take the time to talk to our customers when they come for an eye examination, to understand the various demands they may have from their eyewear. No two people are the same! For example, we had a customer who was an engraver in their spare time, and they needed very bespoke lenses which were over-powered with specific magnification to help with their hobby.”
Work
From office-based positions using multiple screens to manual jobs which find you working outside, it’s important to consider the right lenses for the task at hand. In turn this may mean a separate pair of glasses to those you wear during your leisure time.
For example, if you are a varifocal user who spends much of the day using a computer or laptop, you may find that you benefit from a separate pair of near vision glasses for screen work.
Style
Switching up the style of frames you are wearing can have an instant impact on your look. Think strong and serious black acetate frames for work, with something in a bolder colour to match a showstopping outfit, or barely-there frames for a wedding or special celebration.
Practicality
Even if you’re someone who takes care of their specs, accidents can still happen. So having a spare pair at hand in case you lose or damage your main pair makes complete sense!
Sunglasses
Alongside your usual prescription glasses, investing in a pair of sunglasses is one of the easiest things you can do to look after your eyes. Sunglasses are important year-round, offering protection from debilitating glare and UV rays not only to your eyes but your eyelids and the skin surrounding them, too.
And it’s not just specs…
Many of our customers like to keep their options open when it comes to eyewear, switching between glasses and contact lenses depending on the occasion and the look they are trying to achieve. If you are interested in trying contact lenses, get in touch – our team will be happy to help.
